About WIMA Sweden
WIMA Sweden was founded by Britt Inger Petterson from Finspång in the 60s. She was very active and her links to England and Germany were strong. The members were spread over the south of Sweden with a cluster in Gothenburg. Back then motorcycling women were not a common sight in Sweden and it can be read in various newspaper articles that they rode all kinds of machines: from 125cc up to the at the time huge 750cc. WIMA Sweden has several members who have stayed loyal over the years, Margareta Behr joined in 1970 and remained a member until the end!
Our main activities in Sweden have always been the spring and the autumn meeting. These are organised by members and are typically held in a vandrarhem (hostel) on the countryside and are an opportunity to enjoy local culture, ride, chat, cook and eat together in a casual way.
We have hosted several international rallies: 1975 in Omberg, 1985 in Gålö, 1995 in Morokulien, 2005 in Gyllebo, 2015 in Sundet.
Notable members
Ingela Nyman, President 1994-1998
She was the national president who set up the constitution and created a more formal structure with board members for WIMA Sweden.
Berry Keller, President 1975-1994, 2002-2007
She has been a member since 1973 and regularly travelled to the international rallies together with her husband and when her children where young she brought them as well. She is known for riding her red BMW joined by her husband with his BMW sidecar.
Berry is a well-known character internationally and she would always find an opportunity to sing “Flee fly flo” with everyone in the party tent. This song is listed in the songs section.
Inger Sjölander-Eson, President 1998-2002
She has been a member since 1981 and is still active in WIMA Sweden. She was the president that increased the membership the most by for example taking part in motorcycle fairs in Sweden. She was initially riding a Honda Silverwing and later a Honda Pan European.
Carola Palmqvist, President since 2007
“I’ve been a member since 1995 and I’ve taken part in most of the international rallies. Although I’ve ridden a lot of different bikes, I might be best known for riding Harleys. My current bike is a Harley Davidson FatBoy. In the early years I rode a modified Sportster 1000cc from 1974, still have it at home and now with a new look. Attending rallies is always a great pleasure and I’ve had the honour to meet many WIMA legends, and I hope to meet many more. My motto is ‘Love to ride, ride to live’”.
