About WIMA Finland
In 1993, the idea of creating a nationwide motorcycling club exclusively for women emerged in Finland. The first women- only motorcycle riding course was held in May that year, and the eleven participants decided to establish Ladies’ Bike Club.
In 1994, members heard about the international WIMA organisation but lacked detailed information. By 1995, they learned about an upcoming WIMA rally in Sweden. Four women and two children attended the rally to explore the organisation. Inspired by the experience, the club joined WIMA later that year, officially becoming Ladies’ Bike Club/ WIMA Finland in 1998. Interestingly, the first WIMA rally in Finland was held in 1973 in Pihtipudas, long before the Finnish division’s official formation. Raila Rinne, a WIMA member involved in international rallies, played a key role in organising this first rally.
Over the past 30 years, WIMA Finland has grown to approximately 350 members. Annual activities include the season-opening rally in May, women’s riding training, a summer rally in June, and a season-closing rally in September. Members also regularly attend international WIMA rallies, alongside smaller gatherings and rides across Finland. During the off-season, the club participates in exhibitions and events. WIMA Finland has hosted international WIMA rallies in 2000, 2008, and 2018, with plans for another rally underway. The club continues to foster community among women motorcyclists while promoting safe, enjoyable riding. With a rich history and vibrant present, WIMA Finland exemplifies the power of community and shared passion for motorcycling.
Notable members
Throughout the years, many remarkable women have shaped WIMA Finland’s growth and success. Some remain active riders, while others have left lasting legacies:
Kristiina Harju
Organiser of Finland’s first women- only riding course and one of the eleven founding members. Her initiative was crucial in establishing the club.
Anu Puhakainen
A former president and now honorary member, Anu significantly
enhanced the club’s visibility during its early years.
Jennifer Rung
Recognised for redesigning the club’s logo and creating the cherished “Wooden Helmet” (Puupää) rotating award.
Suvi Ahtosalo
A long-serving president, active rider, and trainer who participated in numerous WIMA rallies. She helped many women join the club and served on the WIMA World board. You can read more about her in the Officers section.
Eivor Kotilainen
A dedicated board member who contributed extensively, including maintaining the membership registry.
Pirjo Kivimäki
A former president and long-time member who significantly influenced the club’s development. She is active in international WIMA rallies and served as International Historian. She has also received the Ellen Pfeiffer award.
