The venue for the Continental division rally in 1971 was Hotel Roter Kater, Kassel, West Germany. The hotel is by the river Fulda, in the Wolfsanger area of Kassel. A garden area adjoining the hotel was used as a campsite.
Shirley Tarrant from England wrote a report of the rally for WIMA News: I was the first to arrive at the rally, followed by Captain Ellen (Pfeiffer) R75/S, then came Christel BMW, Robbie R75/S and Agnès (Acker) 350 Suzuki, Yvonne 350 Suzuki, Nini and Janette 175 Honda, Traudl and Hans 350 Yamaha, Edda and Herman BMW. This group were the main participants. Later in the week came Susie 450 Honda and Jo 175 Naico. There were other girls coming and going whom I did not know. Fewer girls and nationalities arrived than there had been in France (1970).
Shirley described the programme of competitive events and visits organised for participants:
- Monday – Fox Hunt. This was a trail of white powder laid on the road approximately 100-200 metres from a junction and participants had to find the road with the powder on it.
- Tuesday – Slalom. Wiggle in and out between oil cans, then up and over a see-saw plank to stop immediately with the front axle on a marker. Then left and winding in and out between the cans placed in curves, followed by a left hander which needed to be taken fast to save seconds, and stop by a plank without knocking it over. Back away from there, wiggle through some more cans, take a ball from Robbie and throw it into a box while moving, and not knocking down surrounding cans. Then over to the finish line.
- Wednesday – Visit to the Hercules monument and some castles in the Kassel area.
- Thursday – Chinese Rally. Following paper road directions consisting of arrow and distances in kms to junctions.
- Friday – Sprint. An unused old road had a 300-metre strip measured out on it, and another 200-metre strip for a run-off at the end. We did one practice run and three timed runs which were then totalled to define the score. Evening entertainment was provided at the hotel and consisted of slides, talks and motor racing films each night.
- Saturday evening was of course prize giving. I was very lucky and happy to receive the first place overall giving me the WIMA Cup and the Otto Pokal Wanderpreis. Agnès was in second place, and third was Ellen. Renate was also presented with a gift from Captain Ellen for her very great efforts in organising the rally. The evening ended about 1.30 am after music and dancing.
